Low mood can settle over everything like a grey weight, draining your energy, your sleep and your interest in the things you used to enjoy. It is exhausting in a way that is hard to explain, and reaching out for support takes real courage. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to gently support emotional wellbeing and ease some of the physical symptoms that often come with low mood, such as poor sleep, low energy and tension, as one part of a wider approach to feeling better.
In Chinese medicine, persistent low mood is understood as a stagnation of Qi affecting the Heart, Spleen and Liver systems, which are seen as governing emotional flow, energy and resilience. When that flow slows, it can affect sleep, appetite, clarity and mood. Acupuncture aims to ease the stagnation and support the body's balance, which many people find helps them feel a little lighter and more able to cope alongside their other support.

Acupuncture is used as supportive, drug-free care to help with the physical symptoms that often accompany low mood, such as poor sleep, low energy, tension and restlessness. By stimulating specific points, treatment aims to calm and rebalance the nervous system, which can support more restful sleep and a steadier sense of energy. Many people also find the calm, unhurried space of a session valuable in itself, and feeling more rested often makes everything else a little easier to face.
We are honest about what this can and cannot do. Acupuncture is not a cure for depression, and responses vary from person to person. What it offers is gentle support for your physical wellbeing that can complement the care you receive from your doctor, therapist or counsellor, as part of looking after yourself as a whole.

We want to be clear and caring about this: acupuncture is supportive care, not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment for depression. Depression is a real and serious condition, and it deserves proper professional support. If you are struggling, please also speak with your doctor or a mental health professional, and if you ever feel you may be in crisis or at risk of harming yourself, please seek urgent help straight away. Acupuncture can sit alongside that care to support your wellbeing, never in place of it.
For low mood we often complement acupuncture with gentle supporting therapies in the same session, guided by the assessment and always at a comfortable pace:
The aim throughout is gentle, steady support rather than any dramatic claim. For many people, simply having a regular, calm point in the week where they are cared for, and where sleep and energy slowly improve, becomes a helpful part of their recovery alongside their other support.

Low mood affects people in different ways. As supportive care, alongside professional treatment, we can help ease these.
Physical tension that often comes with stress and low mood.
Changes in appetite and digestion linked to mood.
Seasonal dips in mood and motivation.
Your first visit begins with an unhurried, understanding assessment. We ask about how you have been feeling, your sleep, energy, appetite and any physical symptoms, along with your medical history and any care you are already receiving. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. There is no pressure, and we will always work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch. The session is designed to be calm and restful, and you rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes in a quiet room. Afterwards we explain what we found and suggest a gentle, realistic schedule, since this kind of support tends to build with regular sessions.
