The weeks and months after having a baby are a time of huge change, physically and emotionally, and looking after yourself can easily fall to the bottom of the list. Exhaustion, aches, low mood and the sheer demands of caring for a newborn take a real toll. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine as gentle, supportive care for the postpartum period, helping with energy, mood, aches and overall wellbeing, working alongside the care of your doctor, midwife or health visitor.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the period after childbirth is seen as an important time for rest and recovery, when the body's energy, or Qi, and blood are naturally depleted and need replenishing. This is why so many traditions place such emphasis on caring for a new mother. Acupuncture aims to support your body gently as it recovers, helping you feel more rested, more like yourself, and better able to meet the demands of early parenthood.

Acupuncture is used as gentle, supportive care to help with the common challenges of the postpartum period, such as exhaustion, low mood, aches and disturbed sleep, by helping the body feel more rested and supporting your sense of wellbeing. By calming the nervous system and supporting relaxation, treatment can help with the depletion and overwhelm that so many new parents feel. Many find a calm, nurturing session a rare and welcome moment of care for themselves during an intense time.
We are realistic and honest that responses vary from person to person, and that this is gentle support for your wellbeing and recovery, not a treatment that changes the medical aspects of the postpartum period. Acupuncture works best as part of looking after yourself, alongside rest, support and the care of your medical and midwifery team.
It is important to be clear and caring: your postnatal recovery should be guided by your doctor, midwife or health visitor, and acupuncture is gentle supportive care alongside that, not a replacement for it. If you have any concerns about feeding or your milk supply, please speak with your midwife or a lactation consultant. And if you are struggling with your mood, please know that postnatal low mood and depression are common and treatable, and we always encourage you to talk to your doctor or health visitor. We are here to support your wellbeing alongside the care you receive.
As gentle, supportive care, alongside your medical and midwifery care, acupuncture may help with:
For postpartum recovery we keep everything gentle and often complement acupuncture with supporting therapies, guided by the assessment and how you are feeling:
Everything is paced to you and to where you are in your recovery. If you had a complicated birth or a caesarean, we start especially gently and ask that you have your doctor's clearance first. The aim throughout is to care for you, helping you feel a little more rested and like yourself.
Your first visit begins with an unhurried, understanding consultation. We ask about your birth and recovery, your energy, mood and sleep, any aches, whether you are breastfeeding, and your medical history. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. We then plan gentle, supportive treatment suited to you, and you are very welcome to bring your baby with you.
The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch. The session is designed to be calm and restful, and you rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes. Afterwards we explain what we found and suggest a gentle, realistic schedule. Always tell us if you are breastfeeding so we can keep any herbal recommendations safe.
I visited for spinal treatment and I'm extremely satisfied. The massage and cupping really helped my back pain — the therapists are skilled, knowledgeable and gentle.

Acupuncture is offered as gentle, supportive care for the postpartum period, helping with exhaustion, low mood, aches and overall wellbeing. It works alongside the care of your doctor, midwife or health visitor, not as a replacement for medical or midwifery care.
Treatment begins gently and once you feel ready. If you had a complicated birth or a caesarean, we ask that you have your doctor's clearance first. We always start especially gently and pace everything to your recovery.
The deep tiredness after birth is one of the main things we aim to support. By helping the body feel more rested and supporting relaxation, treatment can help with the depletion and overwhelm many new parents feel, alongside rest and support.
Acupuncture can offer gentle support for low mood and the emotional ups and downs of early parenthood. Postnatal low mood and depression are common and treatable, so please also speak with your doctor or health visitor if you are struggling. We support your wellbeing alongside that care.
We do not make claims about milk supply. Any concerns about feeding or milk supply should go to your midwife or a lactation consultant, who are the right people to help. Acupuncture is offered as general wellbeing and recovery support.
Yes, absolutely. You are very welcome to bring your baby with you. We understand the realities of early parenthood and keep sessions calm and accommodating.
Acupuncture itself is generally well tolerated. If we consider any herbal medicine, it must be safe for breastfeeding, so always tell us if you are breastfeeding and we will keep your care safe. Our clinic follows DHA standards.
Yes. Feeding, carrying and caring for a baby often bring aches and tension in the back, neck and shoulders. Gentle treatment can help ease these, as part of supportive postnatal care.
Support for recovery usually builds over a gentle, steady course rather than a single session. We suggest a realistic plan after your consultation and adjust it to how you feel, always paced to you.
Most people feel very little. The needles are far thinner than injection needles. You may feel a small pinch, and the session is designed to be calm and restful, a moment of care for yourself.
Beyond the broken nights of a newborn, many new parents find it hard to rest even when they can. By calming the nervous system, treatment can support better sleep and rest where possible, which helps with energy and mood.
Please know that postnatal low mood and depression are common and treatable, and you are not alone. We gently encourage you to speak with your doctor or health visitor. Acupuncture can support your wellbeing alongside that care, never in place of it.
This page is about postpartum, the period after birth, not pregnancy. We offer gentle supportive care for recovery after childbirth. If you are pregnant and looking for support, please ask us and we will guide you appropriately.
Where suitable and safe, we may prescribe Chinese herbal medicine alongside acupuncture, after a proper assessment. Because you may be breastfeeding, anything prescribed must be safe for that, so always tell us if you are feeding.
We take an unhurried, understanding history of your birth and recovery, your energy, mood and sleep, any aches, whether you are breastfeeding, and your medical history, and usually check your tongue and pulse. We then plan gentle, supportive treatment, and you can bring your baby.
Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the consultation. The session is designed to be calm and restful, with the needles usually left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Just come as you are, and bring your baby if you need to. Wear comfortable clothing and eat something beforehand. There is no pressure, and we will work gently around how you are feeling.
Many new parents feel depleted and unlike themselves. By supporting energy, mood, sleep and a sense of being cared for, gentle treatment aims to help you feel a little more rested and more yourself, alongside rest and support.
No referral is needed, though we will ask about your birth, recovery and medical care and work alongside it. You can book a postpartum support consultation by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
