Acupuncture for Menstrual Disorders in Dubai

Painful cramps, unpredictable cycles and heavy periods can take over your month, disrupting work, sleep and how you feel in yourself. When your period is a source of dread rather than just a part of life, it wears you down. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help ease menstrual symptoms and support a more comfortable, settled cycle, working alongside your medical care rather than only masking the symptoms.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, menstrual problems are understood as signs of imbalance in the flow of Qi and blood, often involving the Liver, Spleen and Kidney systems, which are seen as governing the cycle, blood and emotional balance. Rather than focusing on the symptoms alone, treatment takes a whole-body view, including stress and sleep, which can affect the cycle. Acupuncture aims to support this balance and help ease the discomfort and disruption your periods bring.

Understanding the approach

How can acupuncture help menstrual problems?

Acupuncture is used to help ease menstrual symptoms such as period pain, irregular or heavy cycles and PMS, by supporting circulation to the pelvic area, easing muscle tension and cramping, and calming the stress that can affect the cycle. Because stress, sleep and the cycle are closely linked, calming the nervous system is often part of how treatment helps. Many people find that, over a course of treatment, their cramps feel more manageable and their cycle feels more settled.

Because the menstrual cycle unfolds over weeks, support usually builds across a few cycles rather than a single session. We are realistic that responses vary from person to person, and we focus on easing your symptoms and supporting your wellbeing as part of a whole-body, gentle approach alongside your medical care.

One sensible, caring note: while many period problems are uncomfortable rather than dangerous, some do need a doctor's attention. If you have very heavy bleeding, severe pain, bleeding between periods, or a sudden change in your cycle, please see your doctor to have it properly checked. Acupuncture is supportive, complementary care that can work alongside medical advice, and we are always glad to support you in that way.

Menstrual symptoms often overlap with other concerns — see also hormonal imbalance, PCOS, and anxiety and stress.

The approach

A combined, supportive approach

For menstrual problems we often complement acupuncture with gentle supporting therapies, guided by the assessment:

  • Warming moxibustion, a long-standing part of TCM for cold-type, crampy period pain.
  • Chinese herbal medicine, where suitable, prescribed after a proper assessment to support your cycle.
  • Treatment aimed at stress and sleep, since both influence how the cycle feels.

If your menstrual symptoms are part of a wider concern such as PCOS, or if you are trying to conceive, we treat those on dedicated pages and can take a joined-up view of your care. This page focuses on easing your menstrual symptoms; tell us your main concern and we will guide you to the most suitable support.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit begins with an unhurried consultation. We ask about your cycle, how regular it is, how heavy and painful your periods are, your PMS symptoms, your stress and sleep, and your medical history, including any investigations or treatment you are having. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. We then plan supportive treatment suited to your cycle.

The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch. Many of the points used are on the lower abdomen, lower back, arms and legs, and the session is generally very relaxing. You rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes. Afterwards we explain what we found and suggest a realistic schedule, since support for the cycle usually builds across a few cycles.

Easing painful periods and cramping is one of the main things acupuncture aims to help with, by supporting circulation to the pelvic area and easing muscle tension. Warming moxibustion is often used alongside it for crampy, cold-type pain.

We frame acupuncture as supporting a more settled, comfortable cycle rather than claiming it controls your hormones or ovaries. By supporting the body's balance and easing stress, many people find their cycle feels more regular over a course of treatment.

While many period problems are uncomfortable rather than dangerous, some need medical attention. If you have very heavy bleeding, severe pain, bleeding between periods, or a sudden change in your cycle, please see your doctor. Acupuncture can work alongside medical advice.

Acupuncture can be used to help with heavy or prolonged periods as supportive care, alongside your medical care. Heavy bleeding should also be checked by your doctor to rule out a cause that needs treatment.

Because the cycle unfolds over weeks, support usually builds across a few cycles rather than a single session. We suggest a realistic plan after your consultation and adjust it as your cycle responds.

Most people feel very little. The needles are far thinner than injection needles. You may feel a small pinch, and the session is generally very relaxing.

We take an unhurried history of your cycle, how regular, heavy and painful your periods are, your PMS, stress and sleep, and any treatment you are having, and usually check your tongue and pulse. We then plan supportive treatment suited to your cycle.

Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the consultation. The needles are usually left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes while you rest.

It helps to know roughly your recent cycle dates and what your symptoms have been like, so we can see the pattern. Eat something light beforehand and wear comfortable clothing that gives access to the lower abdomen and back.

If conceiving is your main goal, we cover fertility on a dedicated page and can take a joined-up view alongside your menstrual care. Acupuncture is offered there as supportive care alongside any medical treatment.

No referral is needed, though we will ask about any investigations or treatment and work alongside your care. You can book a menstrual health consultation by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
