When you feel constantly run-down, catch every cold going round, or take a long time to bounce back after illness, life feels like hard work. Persistent tiredness and a slow recovery can leave you depleted and low. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine as gentle, supportive care to help with energy, resilience and overall wellbeing when you are feeling run-down or recovering, working alongside the care of your doctor.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, feeling repeatedly run-down is often linked to weakened defensive energy, known as Wei Qi, seen as the body's protective layer. When you are depleted by ongoing stress, poor sleep or a demanding period, that protective energy is thought to weaken, leaving you feeling more vulnerable and slower to recover. Acupuncture aims to support this energy and help you feel more resilient, rested and like yourself, as a complement to looking after your health more broadly.

Acupuncture is used as gentle, supportive care to help you feel more energetic, rested and resilient when you are run-down or recovering, by calming the nervous system, supporting better sleep, and helping the body feel more balanced. Because ongoing stress and poor sleep can leave anyone feeling depleted and run-down, supporting these is often a central part of how treatment helps. Many people find that, over a course of treatment, their energy and sense of wellbeing improve and they feel more like themselves.
How treatment is approached depends on your situation, which is why assessment comes first. Support for someone feeling generally run-down and stressed looks different from support during recovery after an illness. We are realistic that responses vary from person to person, and we focus on supporting your energy, rest and wellbeing as gentle, whole-body care alongside your medical care.

One sensible, honest note: frequent illness, persistent fatigue or a slow recovery are worth discussing with your doctor, as they can sometimes have an underlying cause that needs proper attention. Acupuncture is supportive, complementary care to help you feel more rested and resilient alongside that, not a replacement for medical care, and not a substitute for vaccination or medical treatment. We are realistic and honest about what gentle, supportive care can offer.
People seek this kind of gentle, supportive care for many reasons. As supportive care, alongside your medical care, it may help when you are:

For immune support and recovery we often complement acupuncture with gentle supporting therapies, guided by the assessment:
If your tiredness is long-standing, or began after a specific illness such as COVID, we look at those on dedicated pages and can take a joined-up view — see chronic fatigue and post-COVID recovery. The aim throughout is gentle, realistic support to help you feel more rested, more resilient and more like yourself, alongside your medical care.
Energy, recovery and resilience cover a lot of ground, and we treat several specific areas on their own pages. If your main concern is one of these, those pages are the best place to start:

Your first visit begins with an unhurried consultation. We ask about how you have been feeling, your energy, sleep and stress, how often you get unwell or how your recovery is going, and your medical history, including anything your doctor is looking into. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. We then plan gentle, supportive treatment suited to you.
The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch. The session is generally very relaxing, and you rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes. Afterwards we explain what we found and suggest a realistic schedule, since support for energy and resilience usually builds over a steady course of sessions.
I visited for spinal treatment and I'm extremely satisfied. The massage and cupping really helped my back pain — the therapists are skilled, knowledgeable and gentle.
