A migraine is far more than a bad headache. The throbbing pain, the sensitivity to light and sound, the nausea and the fog that lingers afterwards can wipe out an entire day, and when headaches become frequent, you start planning your life around them. Reaching for painkillers again and again brings its own problem, since overusing them can lead to rebound headaches that make things worse. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help reduce how often migraines and chronic headaches strike, and how severe they are when they do, without relying on medication.
Acupuncture is one of the better-studied uses of Traditional Chinese Medicine for headaches, and it is increasingly recognised as an option for migraine prevention. In Chinese medicine, recurring headaches are often linked to tension and poor circulation in the head and neck, or to a pattern described as Liver Yang Rising, where stress and imbalance drive heat and pressure upward. Treatment works to release that tension, calm the system and support steadier circulation, with the aim of fewer and milder headaches over time.

Acupuncture is thought to help migraines and headaches by easing muscle tension in the head, neck and shoulders, supporting circulation, and prompting the body to release its own natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins. By calming an over-stimulated nervous system and relaxing the tight muscles that often trigger headaches, treatment can help reduce both how frequently headaches occur and how intense they feel. Because the relief comes from the body's own response, it avoids the rebound effect that can come from frequent painkiller use.
Used as a course over several weeks, acupuncture is often used as a preventive approach for migraine, aiming to reduce the number of headache days rather than only treating a single attack. We are realistic about results, which vary from person to person, and we focus on helping you get fewer, less disruptive headaches and more clear, comfortable days.

For migraine and chronic headache we often combine acupuncture with complementary therapies in the same session, guided by the assessment:
Because so many headaches begin with tension in the neck and shoulders, easing that tension is often central to the treatment. Calming the nervous system also helps with the stress that triggers headaches for many people, which is why patients frequently notice their sleep and stress levels improve alongside their headaches.

Migraine and chronic headache cover several distinct problems. At the clinic we regularly help with:
Migraine, including migraine with and without aura.
Chronic and frequent tension headaches.
Rebound headaches from frequent painkiller use, as part of a wider plan.
Your first visit begins with an assessment. We ask about your headaches, how often they happen, how long they last, what seems to trigger them, your sleep and stress, and your medical history, including any medication you take. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. This helps us understand your headache pattern and build a treatment plan aimed at prevention as well as relief.
The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch or a dull, warm sensation as a point activates. You then rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes, which most patients find deeply relaxing. Afterwards we explain what we found and give you a realistic idea of how many sessions your headaches are likely to need, since prevention usually involves a steady course.
Acupuncture is one of the better-studied uses of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is increasingly recognised as an option for migraine prevention. Results vary from person to person, but the focus stays the same: fewer, less disruptive headaches and more clear, comfortable days, worked at alongside any medication or medical care you already have.
*Responses to treatment vary from person to person; acupuncture is supportive care alongside your medical treatment, not a replacement for it.
I visited for spinal treatment and I'm extremely satisfied. The massage and cupping really helped my back pain — the therapists are skilled, knowledgeable and gentle.

Yes. Acupuncture is one of the better-studied uses of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is increasingly recognised as an option for migraine prevention. It aims to reduce how often migraines occur and how severe they are, by easing tension, supporting circulation and prompting the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals.
Mainly prevention. Acupuncture is most often used as a course over several weeks to reduce the number of headache days over time, rather than as a treatment for a single migraine attack in progress.
Yes. Many tension headaches start with tight muscles in the neck and shoulders. Acupuncture, often with cupping or massage, helps release that tension, which can reduce the frequency and intensity of tension headaches.
Prevention usually involves a steady course rather than a one-off session. Many people start with weekly sessions over several weeks. We give you a realistic plan after the assessment and adjust as your headaches respond.
Responses vary. Some people notice a change within a few weeks of regular treatment, while others take longer. Because the aim is prevention, the benefit usually builds over a course rather than appearing immediately.
Most people feel very little. The needles are far thinner than injection needles. You may feel a small pinch or a dull, warm ache as a point activates, and many find the session deeply relaxing.
Overusing painkillers can lead to rebound headaches. Because acupuncture works through the body's own pain-relieving response, it can be a helpful drug-free approach as part of a wider plan to reduce reliance on medication. Discuss any medication changes with your doctor.
Occasionally some people feel a mild, short-lived headache or tiredness after a first session, which usually settles. If you are prone to migraines, we keep the first treatment gentle and adjust based on how you respond.
We treat migraine both with and without aura. The preventive approach is similar, aiming to reduce how often and how severely attacks occur. Tell us about your aura symptoms during the assessment so we can plan accordingly.
Often, yes. Headaches that start in the neck and shoulders (cervicogenic) and tension headaches are very common. Part of our assessment is identifying how much your neck is contributing, which guides the treatment.
Yes, when performed by a licensed practitioner with sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are minor, usually slight bruising or short-lived tiredness. Our clinic follows DHA standards.
Acupuncture can be used to help with hormonal and menstrual headaches as part of a wider approach to balance and tension. We assess your pattern, including any link to your cycle, when planning treatment.
Yes. Stress is a major trigger for both tension headaches and migraines. Calming the nervous system is part of how acupuncture helps, which is why many patients find their stress and sleep improve alongside their headaches.
In most cases acupuncture is used alongside existing treatment. We do not ask you to stop prescribed medication. Any changes should be made with your doctor, and we are happy to work alongside their advice.
We assess how often your headaches occur, how long they last, your triggers, sleep and stress, and your history, and usually check your tongue and pulse. Then treatment begins, and we explain a realistic plan aimed at prevention as well as relief.
Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the assessment. The needles are usually left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes while you rest.
It helps to note when your recent headaches happened and what may have triggered them, so we can spot patterns. Eat something light beforehand and arrive a little early so you are relaxed.
Yes. Tracking when your headaches occur, how long they last and possible triggers helps us see patterns and measure progress over a course of treatment. We are happy to guide you on what to record.
No referral is needed. You can book a migraine or headache assessment directly by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
