Sciatica has a way of taking over your day. It is the sharp, shooting pain that runs from your lower back down through the buttock and into the leg, sometimes with tingling, numbness or a weak, heavy feeling in the foot. When it flares, sitting, standing and sleeping all become uncomfortable. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we treat sciatica and disc-related pain with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine that targets the cause of the nerve irritation, not just the pain it produces.
Most sciatica comes from pressure on the sciatic nerve, often from a slipped or herniated disc, nerve compression, or tight, spasming muscles deep in the lower back and buttock. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this kind of obstruction is described as a Bi syndrome, a blockage of Qi and blood that cuts off proper circulation along the nerve's pathway. The aim of treatment is to clear that blockage so the nerve is no longer under pressure.

Sciatica is usually caused by something pressing on or irritating the sciatic nerve, most often a slipped or herniated disc, but also spinal narrowing, muscle spasm, or strain in the deep muscles of the lower back and hip. Disc problems happen when the soft cushioning between the spine's bones bulges or tears, which can press on nearby nerves and cause both back pain and the radiating leg pain that defines sciatica.
In Dubai we see these problems triggered by long hours of sitting, heavy lifting at the gym, sudden awkward movements, poor posture, and jobs that involve a lot of driving. Because the same leg pain can come from different underlying causes, the assessment matters: sciatica from a disc is managed differently from sciatica driven mainly by muscle spasm.

Acupuncture treats sciatica by placing fine needles at specific points to reduce inflammation around the nerve, release the tight muscles compressing it, and improve circulation along the affected pathway. As the muscle spasm settles and blood flow improves, the pressure on the sciatic nerve eases, which reduces the shooting pain, the numbness and the tingling, and helps restore normal movement and strength to the leg.
For sciatica and disc problems we often combine acupuncture with complementary therapies in the same session, based on what the assessment shows:
A regular course of treatment does more than relieve a flare-up. By easing muscle tension and supporting better spinal alignment, it can reduce how often the pain returns and how severe it is when it does, without relying on long-term medication.

Sciatica and disc problems cover several related issues. At the clinic we regularly treat these.
Pain radiating from the lower back into the leg.
Slipped, bulging or herniated disc pain.
Nerve pain, tingling and numbness in the leg or foot.
Muscle spasm and tightness in the lower back and buttock.
Your first visit begins with an assessment. We ask about your pain, where it travels, when it started, what makes it better or worse, any numbness or weakness, and your daily routine, along with your medical history. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. This helps us understand whether your sciatica is coming mainly from a disc, from nerve compression, or from muscle spasm, and it shapes your treatment plan.
The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and they are placed in the surrounding muscle tissue, never near the spinal cord itself. Most people feel little more than a small pinch or a dull, warm sensation as a point activates. You then rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes. Afterwards we explain what we found and give you a realistic idea of how many sessions your condition is likely to need.

*Many patients notice less intense pain within the first few sessions. Nerve-related pain can take longer to settle fully.
I visited for spinal treatment and I'm extremely satisfied. The massage and cupping really helped my back pain — the therapists are skilled, knowledgeable and gentle.

Yes. Sciatica is one of the conditions we treat most often. Acupuncture reduces inflammation around the sciatic nerve, releases the muscles compressing it and improves circulation, which eases the shooting pain and helps restore movement.
Yes, when performed by a licensed practitioner. The fine needles are placed in the surrounding muscle tissue, not near the spinal cord, to relieve the protective muscle spasm caused by a damaged disc.
Yes. Sciatica often causes tingling, numbness or weakness in the leg and foot. By easing nerve compression and improving blood flow, acupuncture helps restore normal sensation and strength.
It depends on the cause and how long you have had it. A recent flare may settle in a few sessions; sciatica from a long-standing disc problem usually needs a longer course. We give you a realistic plan after the assessment.
Most people feel very little. The needles are far thinner than injection needles. You may feel a small pinch or a dull, warm ache as a point activates, and many find the session deeply relaxing.
Many patients notice less intense pain within the first few sessions. Nerve-related pain can take longer to settle fully, but early improvement in comfort and movement is common.
Acupuncture does not repair a disc, but it can relieve the muscle spasm, inflammation and nerve irritation around a bulging or herniated disc, which reduces pain and improves mobility while the area recovers.
Sciatica is pain that runs from the lower back down through the buttock and into the leg, caused by pressure on or irritation of the sciatic nerve, often from a disc problem or tight muscles.
Often, yes. Electro-acupuncture passes a gentle electrical current through the needles and is particularly useful for nerve pain and stubborn muscle spasm. We will explain it before using it.
It can, especially if the underlying habits remain. A proper course aims to reduce muscle tension and support better alignment, and we may suggest gentle measures to lower the chance of it returning.
It depends on your specific case, which is why assessment matters. Complete rest is not always best, and gentle movement is often helpful. We will advise what suits your sciatica.
Avoid heavy lifting, intense activity and long periods of sitting straight after treatment. Keep your lower back warm, drink plenty of water, and let the muscles stay in their relaxed state.
In most cases, yes, acupuncture can be used alongside medication. Tell us what you are taking during your assessment so we can plan your treatment safely.
Many patients use acupuncture to manage sciatica and disc pain conservatively. It is not a replacement for surgical advice, so we work alongside your doctor's guidance where surgery is being considered.
Sciatica usually affects one side, following the path of the sciatic nerve down one leg, though the underlying back problem can sometimes cause discomfort on both sides. We assess your specific pattern.
We assess your pain, where it travels, any numbness or weakness, and your history, and usually check your tongue and pulse. Then treatment begins, and afterwards we explain what we found and the likely number of sessions.
Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the assessment. The needles are usually left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes while you rest.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that lets us reach the lower back and hip easily, eat something light beforehand, and try to arrive a little early so you are relaxed.
No referral is needed. You can book a sciatica or disc pain assessment directly by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
