Acupuncture for Pain After Surgery in Dubai

Recovering from an operation takes time, and the soreness, stiffness and slow return to normal movement can be wearing, especially when you would rather not rely on strong painkillers any longer than you need to. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine as gentle, supportive care to help with post-operative pain, stiffness and comfort during your recovery, working alongside the care of your surgical and medical team.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, recovery after surgery is seen as a time when the body's energy, or Qi, and blood need support to flow well again after the disruption of an operation. Rather than acting on the surgery itself, acupuncture aims to help you feel more comfortable, ease pain and tension, and support you as you regain movement, as a complement to your medical recovery and any physiotherapy.

Understanding the approach

How can acupuncture help after surgery?

Acupuncture is used as supportive care to help with the discomfort of recovering from surgery, such as pain, stiffness and muscular tension, by easing pain, helping you relax and supporting your sense of comfort. Many people value a drug-free way to help manage post-operative pain alongside, or as they reduce, their pain medication, which they can discuss with their doctor. By helping you feel more comfortable and relaxed, treatment can make the recovery period a little easier to get through.

How treatment is approached depends on your operation and where you are in your recovery, which is why we assess carefully and work gently. Early on, the focus is on comfort and gentle support away from the surgical site; as you heal, treatment can help with the stiffness and tension that come with getting moving again, alongside your physiotherapy and medical care.

One clear and caring note: your recovery after surgery should be led by your surgical and medical team, and acupuncture is supportive care alongside that, not a replacement for it. We only treat near a surgical area once it is safe and healed enough, and with medical clearance where appropriate. If you have any signs of a problem with your wound, such as increasing pain, redness, heat, swelling, discharge or a fever, please seek medical attention straight away, as these need a doctor, not acupuncture.

  • 3Muscular tension and guarding around the area
  • 4General aches from resting or moving differently while you heal
  • 5Stress, tension and poor sleep during recovery

Because we also offer physiotherapy at the clinic, supportive acupuncture can work hand in hand with hands-on rehabilitation as you rebuild strength and movement. Everything is paced to your recovery and coordinated with your medical care, never rushing or working against it.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit begins with a careful consultation. We ask about your operation, how your recovery is going, your pain and movement, any medication you are taking, and importantly whether you have medical clearance to begin, especially for anything near the surgical area. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. We then plan gentle, supportive treatment suited to where you are in your recovery.

The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch. We work gently and well away from any healing wound, and the session is designed to be calm and restful. You rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes. Afterwards we explain what we found and suggest a realistic schedule that fits around your recovery and any physiotherapy.
