Cupping Therapy & Hijama in Dubai

Cupping therapy is one of the oldest and best-loved traditional treatments, used for centuries to ease muscle tension and help people feel relaxed and refreshed. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, our certified practitioners offer cupping therapy, including hijama, as gentle, supportive care, often as part of a wider treatment plan. Many people find it a deeply relaxing way to ease tight, aching muscles and unwind after a stressful week.

Cupping involves placing special cups on the skin to create a gentle suction. This suction draws the skin and underlying tissue slightly upward, which is thought to help release tight muscles and support the flow of blood to the area. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is understood as a way to support the smooth flow of Qi and blood and to ease what is described as stagnation. People most often choose it for tight, achy muscles, particularly across the back and shoulders, and for general relaxation.

Understanding the treatment

What is cupping therapy used for?

Cupping is most commonly used as supportive care to help ease muscle tension and aches, support local circulation and help people relax. It is especially popular for tightness and discomfort across the back, shoulders and neck, and many people simply find it a calming, restorative treatment. As with all our therapies, we are honest that it offers supportive comfort and relaxation rather than a cure, and we use it alongside your wider care.

  • 1Tight, aching muscles, especially in the back, shoulders and neck
  • 2General muscular tension from desk work, training or stress
  • 3Stress and the wish to relax and unwind
  • 4As a complement to acupuncture or massage in a treatment plan

Choosing your treatment

Dry cupping and wet cupping (hijama)

We offer both main types of cupping, and we will talk through which suits you. Dry cupping uses suction alone, with the cups placed on the skin and then removed, leaving no broken skin. Wet cupping, known as hijama, involves making very small, controlled incisions on the skin before applying the cups, and is a long-standing traditional practice well recognised here in the UAE. We will explain both clearly and help you choose what is right for you.

Dry cupping and wet cupping hijama in Dubai

For wet cupping (hijama), your safety is the priority: we use sterile, single-use equipment and follow strict hygiene throughout. Wet cupping is not suitable for everyone, including people taking blood-thinning medication, those with bleeding disorders or anaemia, during pregnancy, or with certain skin conditions, so please tell us your medical history and any medication. If you are unsure whether it is suitable for you, we are happy to advise, and to recommend checking with your doctor. Cupping is supportive care alongside your medical care, never a replacement for it.

What to expect

What does it feel like, and the marks it leaves

Most people find cupping relaxing rather than uncomfortable. You will feel a tight, pulling sensation as the suction takes hold, which usually settles into a pleasant feeling of release. Dry cupping often leaves round, bruise-like marks where the cups were placed. These are normal, are not usually painful, and typically fade over several days to a week or so. We will always let you know what to expect, especially if you have an event coming up.

Working together

A combined approach

Cupping works very well alongside our other therapies, and we often include it as part of a wider treatment plan rather than on its own. For muscular pain, for example, we may combine cupping with acupuncture or Tui Na massage in the same visit, guided by your assessment. This combined approach lets us support you in a few complementary ways at once, all tailored to how you are feeling.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit begins with a short consultation. We ask what is bothering you, your medical history and any medication, and what you would like from the session, and for wet cupping we check it is suitable for you. We then explain the type of cupping we recommend and what it will involve. The treatment itself is usually relaxing, and a session is typically comfortable and unhurried.

Afterwards we explain the marks you may have and how to look after the area, and we suggest a sensible schedule if regular sessions would help. As with all our care, we keep our advice honest and realistic, focused on helping you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

People most often choose cupping as supportive care for tight, aching muscles, especially in the back, shoulders and neck, for general tension, and for relaxation. We frame it as supportive comfort alongside your wider care, not a cure.

We keep the traditional idea of clearing stagnation as a TCM concept rather than a medical claim. We do not claim cupping removes toxins or detoxifies the body. Its real value is helping ease muscle tension and supporting relaxation.

Most people find cupping relaxing. You feel a tight, pulling sensation as the suction takes hold, which usually settles into a pleasant feeling of release. Wet cupping involves small incisions, which we keep as gentle and comfortable as possible.

Dry cupping often leaves round, bruise-like marks where the cups were placed, caused by the suction. They are normal, not usually painful, and typically fade over several days to a week or so. Tell us if you have an event coming up.

When done with sterile, single-use equipment and strict hygiene, by a certified practitioner, wet cupping is generally well tolerated. It is not suitable for everyone, so we check your medical history first. Our clinic follows DHA standards.

Wet cupping may not be suitable for people taking blood-thinning medication, with bleeding disorders or anaemia, during pregnancy, or with certain skin conditions. Please tell us your medical history, and we will advise, including checking with your doctor if needed.

Please tell us if you are pregnant. Wet cupping is generally avoided in pregnancy, and any cupping during pregnancy should only be considered gently, with caution, and ideally after checking with your doctor. Your safety comes first.

Tight, aching muscles in the back and shoulders are among the most common reasons people choose cupping, as supportive care to help ease tension. For ongoing pain, see our back and neck and shoulder pages, and we can combine therapies.

Many people feel lighter and more relaxed after a session, with eased muscle tension. You may have cupping marks for a few days. We will explain how to look after the area afterwards.

It depends on what you are seeking support for. Some people come for an occasional relaxing session, others more regularly for ongoing tension. We suggest a sensible schedule after your first visit.

No. Cupping is supportive care that works alongside your medical care, never in place of it. Please continue with your doctor's advice and tell us about any conditions or medication.

Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the consultation. The cups are usually left in place for several minutes, and the session is generally relaxing and unhurried.

Eat something light beforehand, stay hydrated, and wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area, often the back and shoulders. Tell us about your health and any medication when you arrive.

Keep the area clean, especially after wet cupping, stay hydrated, and avoid very hot showers, saunas or strenuous activity for the rest of the day. We will give you simple aftercare advice.

No referral is needed, though we will ask about your health and, for wet cupping, check it is suitable. You can book a cupping session by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
