Gua Sha Scraping Therapy in Dubai

Gua sha is a traditional East Asian therapy that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently stroke the skin, helping to ease muscle tension and leave you feeling looser and more relaxed. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, our experienced practitioners offer gua sha as gentle, supportive care, often as part of a wider treatment plan. It is a simple, hands-on way to help release the tight, knotted feeling that builds up across the neck, shoulders and back.

During gua sha, the practitioner applies a little oil to the skin and then uses the smooth edge of a tool to stroke firmly but comfortably along the muscles. This is thought to help release tension in the muscles and connective tissue and bring fresh blood flow to the area. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, gua sha is understood as a way to support the smooth flow of Qi and blood and to ease what is described as stagnation. People most often choose it for stubborn muscular tension and stiffness.

Understanding the treatment

What is gua sha used for?

Gua sha is most commonly used as supportive care to help ease muscle tension and stiffness, support local circulation and help people relax. It is especially popular for the neck, shoulders and upper back, where tension tends to collect, and many people find it helps with the tightness behind tension headaches. As with all our therapies, we are honest that it offers supportive comfort and relaxation rather than a cure, and we use it alongside your wider care.

  • 1Tight, stiff muscles in the neck, shoulders and back
  • 2Muscular tension from posture, desk work or training
  • 3The muscular tightness that can come with tension headaches
  • 4Stress and the wish to relax and unwind
  • 5As a complement to acupuncture, cupping or massage in a treatment plan

What to expect

What does gua sha feel like, and the marks it leaves

Most people find gua sha firm but comfortable, and often very relaxing, with a pleasant feeling of release as the muscles loosen. It is normal for gua sha to bring up temporary red or purple marks on the skin, called "sha". These are not usually painful, are a normal part of the therapy, and typically fade over a few days. We will always let you know what to expect, especially if you have an event coming up.

Gua sha is not suitable for everyone. It may not be appropriate for people taking blood-thinning medication, those with bleeding disorders, or on fragile or broken skin or certain skin conditions, and we take particular care during pregnancy. Please tell us your medical history and any medication, and if you are unsure whether gua sha is right for you, we are happy to advise, and to recommend checking with your doctor.Gua sha is supportive care alongside your medical care, never a replacement for it.

Working together

A combined approach

Gua sha works very well alongside our other therapies, and we often include it as part of a wider treatment plan rather than on its own. For muscular tension, for example, we may combine gua sha with acupuncture, cupping or Tui Na massage in the same visit, guided by your assessment. This combined approach lets us support you in a few complementary ways at once, all tailored to how you are feeling.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit begins with a short consultation. We ask what is bothering you, your medical history and any medication, and what you would like from the session, and we check gua sha is suitable for you. We then explain what the treatment involves and answer any questions. The treatment itself is usually relaxing, and a session is typically comfortable and unhurried.

Afterwards we explain the "sha" marks you may have and how to look after the area, and we suggest a sensible schedule if regular sessions would help. As with all our care, we keep our advice honest and realistic, focused on helping you feel more comfortable and relaxed.
