Acupuncture for Arthritis & Joint Pain in Dubai

Arthritis wears you down a little at a time. It starts as stiffness in the morning, a knee that aches on the stairs, or wrists and fingers that no longer grip the way they used to, and over time those small frustrations add up. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, we treat arthritis and joint pain with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine that works to reduce the inflammation and ease the stiffness, helping you keep moving comfortably without leaning on medication day after day.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, joint pain is understood as a Bi syndrome, where external factors such as Wind, Cold and Dampness settle into the joints and block the flow of Qi and blood through the meridians. That blockage is what produces the swelling, the aching and the stiffness. Acupuncture aims to clear it, restoring circulation around the joint so the body can settle the inflammation and the joint can move more freely.

Understanding the pain

What causes arthritis and joint pain?

Most joint pain comes from inflammation in and around the joint, whether from osteoarthritis, where the cartilage wears down over time, or rheumatoid arthritis, where the immune system attacks the joint lining. Both lead to swelling, stiffness and pain, particularly in weight-bearing and heavily used joints like the knees, hips, hands and wrists. Age, past injuries, repetitive strain and general wear all play a part.

In Dubai we see joint pain made worse by long hours of sitting, lack of movement, carrying extra weight through the knees and hips, and the cycle where painful joints are used less, which in turn makes them stiffer. Because osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis behave differently, the assessment comes first, so the treatment fits the type of arthritis you have.

The approach

How acupuncture treats arthritis and joint pain

Acupuncture treats joint pain by stimulating specific points to improve circulation around the affected joint, reduce inflammation and prompt the body to release its own pain-relieving endorphins. As blood flow improves and swelling settles, stiffness eases and the joint becomes easier to move. Because the relief comes from the body's own response rather than medication, it avoids the digestive and other side effects that can come with long-term painkillers.

For arthritis and joint pain we often combine acupuncture with complementary therapies in the same session, guided by the assessment:

  • Moxibustion, gentle warming heat, which clears the cold and dampness behind morning stiffness and warms the joints.
  • Cupping to loosen the tight muscles and tendons surrounding a stiff joint and improve local circulation.
  • Tui Na, a Chinese medical massage, to ease the muscles around the joint and support easier movement through the day.

Used over a regular course of treatment, these aim to do more than ease a flare-up. By keeping the joints mobile and the surrounding muscles relaxed, they help you stay active and independent, which is one of the most important things in managing a long-term joint condition.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit begins with an assessment. We ask about your joint pain, which joints are affected, when it is worst, what makes it better or worse, any swelling or stiffness, and your medical history, including the type of arthritis if you have a diagnosis. In keeping with Chinese medicine we usually check your tongue and pulse too. This shapes a treatment plan suited to your joints and the kind of arthritis you have.

The needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people feel little more than a small pinch or a dull, warm sensation as a point activates. You then rest with the needles in place for around twenty to thirty minutes, which most patients find deeply relaxing. Afterwards we explain what we found and give you a realistic idea of how many sessions your condition is likely to need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Arthritis and joint pain are among the conditions we treat most often. Acupuncture improves circulation around the joint, reduces inflammation and prompts the body to release its own pain-relieving endorphins, which eases pain and stiffness.

Yes. Osteoarthritis comes from physical wear and tear, while rheumatoid arthritis comes from an immune reaction, but both cause joint inflammation. Treatment aims to calm the inflammatory response and improve local circulation to reduce swelling and maintain mobility in both.

Acupuncture does not cure or reverse arthritis, but it can be very effective at managing the symptoms, reducing pain and stiffness and helping you keep the joint mobile, which improves day-to-day quality of life.

We treat pain and stiffness in the knees, hips, hands, wrists, fingers, shoulders and other joints. The approach is tailored to which joints are affected and the type of arthritis you have.

It depends on the type of arthritis and how advanced it is. Joint conditions are usually managed with an ongoing course rather than a one-off fix. We give you a realistic plan after the first assessment.

Most people feel very little. The needles are far thinner than injection needles. You may feel a small pinch or a dull, warm ache as a point activates, and many find the session deeply relaxing.

Morning stiffness is often linked to cold and dampness settling in the joints. We frequently use moxibustion, a gentle warming heat, alongside acupuncture to warm the joints and ease that early-day stiffness.

Both clear blockages and lower inflammation, but the focus differs. Back pain treatment works mainly on the large muscle groups and spinal alignment, while joint treatment targets the connective tissue, cartilage and fluid around a specific joint such as the knee, hip or fingers.

Yes. Many patients have several issues at once, often because a painful joint changes how they walk or sit. For example, stiff hips affecting your posture can be treated alongside neck or back pain that develops as a result.

Many patients find they rely less on painkillers as treatment helps manage their joint pain. Any change to prescribed medication should be made with your doctor, and we are happy to work alongside their advice.

Yes, when performed by a licensed practitioner with sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are minor, usually slight bruising or short-lived tiredness. Our clinic follows DHA standards.

Yes. By improving circulation around the affected joint and helping the body settle inflammation, acupuncture can reduce swelling and the discomfort that comes with it.

Degenerative joint conditions are not fixed with a one-off treatment. An ongoing approach aims to nourish the joint tissue, support fluid circulation and ease wear-related discomfort, helping you stay active and independent as you age.

Yes. Knee pain, including pain on stairs and after sitting, is one of the most common joint complaints we treat, using acupuncture to reduce inflammation and ease the surrounding muscle tension.

Yes. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis behave differently, so the assessment comes first and the treatment plan is adapted to the type of arthritis and the joints involved.

We assess which joints are affected, when the pain is worst, any swelling or stiffness, and your history, and usually check your tongue and pulse. Then treatment begins, and afterwards we explain what we found and the likely number of sessions.

Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the assessment. The needles are usually left in place for about 20 to 30 minutes while you rest.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that lets us reach the affected joints easily, eat something light beforehand, and try to arrive a little early so you are relaxed.

No referral is needed. You can book an arthritis or joint pain assessment directly by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
