Moxibustion Therapy in Dubai

Moxibustion is a warming Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that has been used for centuries alongside acupuncture. It uses the gentle heat of a herb called mugwort to warm specific points on the body, which many people find deeply soothing, especially for the kind of cold, achy stiffness that eases with warmth. At Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center in Business Bay, our practitioners offer moxibustion as gentle, supportive care, often combined with acupuncture in the same session.

During moxibustion, dried, compressed mugwort, known as moxa, is warmed near the skin over specific points, without touching the skin directly, so you feel a pleasant, penetrating warmth. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this gentle heat is used to warm the body and support the smooth flow of Qi and blood, and to ease what is traditionally described as "cold" or "cold-damp" patterns, the achy, sluggish stiffness that feels better with warmth. People most often choose it for cold-type aches and for a comforting, warming treatment.

What is moxibustion used for?

What is moxibustion used for?

Moxibustion is most commonly used as supportive care to help ease cold-type, achy muscle and joint discomfort and stiffness, to bring a comforting sense of warmth, and to help people relax. It is often chosen by people whose aches feel worse in the cold or with damp, and who find that warmth helps. As with all our therapies, we are honest that it offers supportive comfort and warmth rather than a cure, and we use it alongside your wider care.

  • Cold, achy muscle and joint stiffness that eases with warmth
  • General aches and a feeling of being run-down or low in energy
  • Period discomfort of the cold, crampy type, as supportive care

The experience

What does moxibustion feel like?

Moxibustion is one of the most comforting treatments we offer. You feel a steady, pleasant warmth spreading over the area as the moxa is held near the skin, never touching it directly. The practitioner stays with you throughout and monitors the warmth carefully, moving the moxa or pausing if it ever feels too hot, so you stay comfortable. Many people find the warmth deeply relaxing, and it pairs naturally with the calm of an acupuncture session.

What moxibustion feels like at Yuan Qi Acupuncture Center, Dubai

Because moxibustion uses a burning herb and heat, your safety and comfort are the priority. There is a small risk of a burn, so the practitioner monitors the warmth closely and removes the moxa the moment it feels too hot, and you should always tell us if it does. The therapy produces some herbal smoke, so we use a ventilated room, and a smokeless option may be available. Moxibustion is not suitable for everyone, including over numb skin or areas of reduced sensation, certain skin conditions, and it is used with particular caution in pregnancy and for people with reduced sensation from diabetes. Mugwort is related to ragweed, so please tell us about any allergies. It is supportive care alongside your medical care, never a replacement, and please tell us if you are or may be pregnant.

A combined approach

A combined approach

Moxibustion works beautifully alongside our other therapies, and we often include it as part of a wider treatment plan rather than on its own. It is most commonly combined with acupuncture in the same session, adding gentle warmth to the points, and it can also sit alongside cupping. We choose and combine therapies based on your assessment, to support you in a few complementary ways at once.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit begins with a short consultation. We ask what is bothering you, your medical history and any medication, whether your symptoms feel better with warmth, and any allergies, and we check moxibustion is suitable for you. We then explain what the treatment involves, including the warmth and the herbal smoke, and answer any questions. The treatment itself is warming and usually very relaxing.

Afterwards we explain how you may feel and suggest a sensible schedule if regular sessions would help, often alongside acupuncture. As with all our care, we keep our advice honest and realistic, focused on helping you feel more comfortable and warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Moxibustion is a warming Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that uses the gentle heat of a herb called mugwort, warmed near the skin over specific points. It is used as supportive care to help ease cold-type, achy stiffness and bring a comforting sense of warmth, often alongside acupuncture.

People most often choose moxibustion as supportive care for cold, achy muscle and joint stiffness that eases with warmth, for general aches and low energy, and for a comforting, warming treatment. We frame it as supportive comfort alongside your wider care, not a cure.

We keep the traditional ideas of warming and clearing "cold" as TCM concepts rather than medical claims. We do not claim moxibustion treats arthritis, changes blood cells or removes inflammation. Its value is gentle, warming, comforting support. For joint pain, see our arthritis page too.

No. The moxa is warmed near the skin, not touching it directly, so you feel a pleasant warmth. The practitioner monitors the heat closely and moves or pauses the moxa if it feels too hot, so you stay comfortable.

Because it uses a burning herb and heat, there is a small burn risk, which is why the practitioner stays with you and monitors the warmth carefully, removing the moxa the moment it feels too hot. Always tell us if it feels too warm.

Yes, burning mugwort produces some herbal smoke with a distinctive scent. We use a ventilated room, and a smokeless option may be available. Tell us if you are sensitive to smoke or have a respiratory condition.

When performed by a trained practitioner who monitors the warmth and checks it is suitable for you, moxibustion is generally well tolerated as supportive care. It is not suitable for everyone, so we take a medical history first. Our clinic follows DHA standards.

It may not be suitable over numb skin or areas of reduced sensation, certain skin conditions, and it is used with particular caution in pregnancy and for people with reduced sensation from diabetes. Mugwort is related to ragweed, so tell us about allergies.

Please tell us if you are pregnant. Moxibustion is used with particular caution in pregnancy, and certain points are avoided. We are happy to recommend checking with your doctor first, and your safety comes first.

Mugwort is in the same plant family as ragweed, so please tell us about any allergies before treatment. We will advise whether moxibustion is suitable for you and consider alternatives if needed.

Cold, achy stiffness that eases with warmth is one of the main reasons people choose moxibustion, as supportive care. For ongoing joint pain such as arthritis, see our arthritis page, and we can combine therapies.

Moxibustion is traditionally used for cold, crampy period discomfort, as supportive care alongside your medical care. Our menstrual disorders page explains our approach to period symptoms in more detail.

Yes, very often. Moxibustion is most commonly added to an acupuncture session, bringing gentle warmth to the points. It can also sit alongside cupping. We combine therapies based on your assessment.

Many people feel warm, comfortable and relaxed after a session. We will explain how you may feel and give any simple aftercare advice.

It depends on what you are seeking support for. Some people come for an occasional warming session, others more regularly, often alongside acupuncture. We suggest a sensible schedule after your first visit.

No. Moxibustion is supportive care that works alongside your medical care, never in place of it. Please continue with your doctor's advice and tell us about any conditions or medication.

Plan for around 45 minutes to an hour for a first visit, including the consultation, and especially if combined with acupuncture. The warming itself is applied gently over the relevant points.

Eat something light beforehand, and wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area to be treated. Tell us about your health, any allergies and any medication when you arrive.

No referral is needed, though we will ask about your health and check moxibustion is suitable. You can book a session by phone, WhatsApp or through our website.
